Concrete in a Wide Desert Valley

Lucerne Valley is a 105.6-square-mile community at 2,953 feet, ringed by three ranges: the Granite Mountains, the Ord Mountains and the San Bernardino Mountains. Two dry lake beds, Lucerne and Rabbit Springs, lie on the valley floor. For concrete contractors, the setting means big lots, long distances from the batch plant and ground that changes from one parcel to the next. Most of the concrete we pour here does a job: parking, storage, shop floors and shade.

Two kinds of homes, two kinds of work

Wikipedia notes that most housing developments in Lucerne Valley are tract-based and were completed before the 1990s, and that recent building has mostly been single homes on privately owned parcels. On the older tracts, requests lean toward repair and replacement: driveways split into loose pieces, walks that tilt, patios sloping back toward the house. On the newer custom homes, owners tend to add what was never built, like a longer drive, a turnaround, a shop floor or a slab under a patio cover.

Checking the ground near the dry lakes

We do not treat every Lucerne Valley lot as the same soil. Sandy alluvium washed off the mountains behaves very differently from fine sediment on low ground near a dry lake bed. Before a large slab or a building pad, we dig test spots to see what is under the surface, then remove and recompact anything soft. If the building has an engineered foundation design, that plan governs. For flatwork, we want a firm, evenly compacted base that drains, and we will not pour on ground that fails a simple probe.

Business owners along Highway 18

Most commercial zoning follows State Route 18, and industrial zoning sits on the south edge of the community, where Mitsubishi Cement operates the Cushenbury plant. Solar power plants are also part of the valley's economy. For small businesses along the highway, we pour and repair the smaller concrete that keeps a property working: entry walks, equipment pads, dumpster pads and broken parking-area panels. Where we can, we schedule around business hours and block off only the area being worked.

County roads

Lucerne Valley is unincorporated, so roads are under San Bernardino County. The county's Public Works Transportation department issues encroachment permits for work in the County Maintained Road System right-of-way, and lists driveway approaches as covered work. If your project includes an approach onto a county-maintained road, we sort out that permit first.

Shade structures and slabs

Open lots catch full sun and steady wind. If a patio cover, carport or shade sail is in your plans, tell us before the pour. Post footings can go in with the slab, or we can leave block-outs where posts will land later. That way nobody saws into new concrete, and joints do not end up running into a post base. Covered slabs still need a fall away from the house, because wind-driven rain gets under any roof.

Practical choices on cost

QuickFacts shows owners in 75.5% of Lucerne Valley homes, and 82.8% of residents had not moved in the past year. On a big lot the list of possible concrete can get long, so we split the estimate into what has to be fixed now, what can wait, and which choices lower the price, such as a broom finish in place of stamping or a gravel strip between two poured sections. Base preparation, reinforcement and curing stay on every line.

The drive out

Lucerne Valley is a longer haul from Hesperia than most of our service area. We schedule pours with travel time built in, confirm road conditions to remote lots, and decide at the estimate whether a pump will be needed.

Lucerne Valley Questions

Is the soil near the dry lakes different?

It can be. Low ground near a dry lake bed may hold finer sediment than the sandy fans higher up. We check what is under the surface and replace soft material before pouring.

Do you travel out to Lucerne Valley?

Yes. We build travel time into the pour schedule and plan a pump for lots far from the road.

Can an older tract driveway be repaired?

If it is mostly level with stable cracks, yes. If large sections have sunk or broken loose, replacement is the longer-lasting fix.
